The Post is proud to award the Herman Laffoon TPA Scholarship to Miss Payton Spicer of East Wilkes High School (pictured at the post’s recent pickleball fundraiser). With her parents in attendance, she was presented the scholarship at a dinner meeting held at Terry’s Cafe and Catering. She plans to attend UNC-Chapel Hill and study to become an orthopedic assistant. For more than 44 years, this scholarship has been awarded to a graduating senior from East Wilkes, Elkin or Starmount High Schools. The scholarship is based on need, academics, extracurricular activities and community involvement. Their most recent fundraiser for the scholarship program was a pickleball tournament in downtown Elkin at Crater Park’s Mickey Carter Courts. Pictured are winners Karol Okruszko and Tony Van. Jay Callahan and Chad Vestal were runner-ups in the field of 32 players. Score keepers were Ann Marie Wasson, Darlene Templeton, Dennis Martin and Sam Mounce.
They also recently hosted a “retirement” dinner meeting at Terry’s Cafe and Catering. Leon Reece (59 years), Elton Lay (58 years), Sam Tesh III (56 years) and William “Bill” Phillips (58 years) received Outstanding Service Awards in recognition of their combined 231 years of service to TPA! They are pictured with long-time TPA leader Bailey Bledsoe.
